Established in 2001, Formaplex is now a leading manufacturer for tooling and lightweight component solutions.
Formaplex's customer base is large with clients in automotive, autosport, aerospace and defence markets. Parts manufactured at Formaplex can be found on vehicles manufactured by many of the OEMs, such as Mclaren, as well as many F1 cars. They boast some of the best facilities in the UK with 44 CNC milling machines for composites tooling, 3 autoclaves and an ongoing multi million pound investment programme.
Formaplex are supporting CUER with all of our composites manufacturing for Helia. We have been working with them throughout the design process to ensure our parts are designed for manufacture. They are supporting us with the machining for all our our moulds as well as providing the expertise required to ensure that our parts are manufactured to a professional standard.
The University of Cambridge Department of Engineering is the largest department at the University and one of the leading centres of engineering in the world.
CUER are based at the Department of Engineering where we have access to the Dyson Centre for Engineering Design, where we designed Helia, and the Oatley Garage, where we have been assembling and testing Helia. The vast majority of CUER members are students at the Department and we have been fortunate to have the support of a number of academics throughout our development and design process.
Over the course of the year the Department’s Design and Technical Service Division has supported us with the manufacture of a number of machined metal components through their workshop.

8d Closures is a UK-based engineering firm specialising in closure systems, providing a full gamut of services from design & development to prototyping and low-scale manufacture.
CUER has been lucky to work closely with 8d Closures in the design of the doors on Helia, benefitting from their engineering team's expertise in the design and production of vehicle closures and latches which meet the most stringent of international vehicle standards. The end result is a set of doors that make entering and exiting Helia a comfortable process for the driver and passengers, without sacrificing occupant safety.

Under the auspices of Ian Gordon Murray, a car designer known globally for his designs of Formula One cars and the creation of the McLaren F1 design, this British consultancy has developed a number of pioneering vehicles. These include the small and practical T.25 (and its electric cousin, the T.27), designed to be an economical city car smaller than the Smart ForTwo, and most recently the T.50 supercar, which the company hails as "the purest, lightest, most driver-focused supercar ever".
Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) is an academic department at the University of Warwick and a leading centre for research in Automotive.
