Oxygen, bombers and a crash.

16/9/2011 – 19:00 (GMT+9:30)

Thursday saw the successful collection of George first thing. A phone call to the freight forwarding company told us the container wouldn’t be available for unloading and customs until Monday, so we have four days to recuperate, acclimatise and organise race logistics. First on the to do list was to visit BOC Darwin to be inducted onto the site and receive our safety gear. I can’t say any of us are particularly looking forward to working in safety specs, long sleeves, boots and trousers in 30°C+ heat, but the workshop and facilities British Oxygen are providing are worth bearing the safety kit.

Whilst conducting Friday morning’s pay and display parking duty, Oli decided to go for a run in the bicentennial park… this was rather short lived as the 28°C heat (at 8am) and high humidity soon took its toll! With little to do until the car is unpacked, discussions over breakfast moved to what to do in the afternoon, the morning taken up with planning and car hire enquiries. With the decision made to visit the aviation museum (fully realising what a stereotypical engineering choice this was) and not at all based on the princely…

CUER: Looking back, looking forwards

It’s been a year and a half since I started working with CUER on preparing Endeavour Mk II to race in the World Solar Challenge next month, and now that the team is finally flying out to Australia (and also because I need to kill some of the six hour wait I have in Singapore Airport for a connecting flight) it seems to me to be a good time to look back and to recount the story of CUER so far as it were.

There is, naturally, no better place to begin than the start, back in the prehistoric mist of time that was 2007. That was when CUER was founded by a chap called Martin McBrien, who having gone to MIT on an exchange year, witnessed their solar car and came back inspired to start up something similar in Cambridge University.

The team started out with Affinity, a testing the waters project to see if it was feasible to grab a bunch of busy Cambridge Undergraduates and say: “Right chaps, let’s make a solar car which will drive from Lands End to John O Groats.” It turned out it was very possible, and with support from MIT (who donated…

A Day of Two Halves

14/9/2011 – 8 P.M. (GMT+9:30)

Following a frustrating morning, the afternoon (generally) went well. A hot walk to the ‘downtown’ car hire lots landed us a 4×4 for the week. We can now get about and more importantly, to and from our workshop at BOC’s site in Darwin. A brief visit to the site shows we’ll be welcomed with open arms, provided with plenty of kit, facilities and have a great space to put the finishing touches to Endeavour.

Dan was collected from the airport in our shiny new ride, however without his bag! This contains most of the cars electronics that didn’t ship in the container:  both new and old battery management systems; the spare telemetry system; the lights; CAN nodes; and boxes of other electronics and cables. It was still in Perth! Apparently his ticket had also confused the BA staff at Heathrow. Bag booked on the next flight so one more trip to the airport required this evening. Douglas and his bag thankfully arrived in the same place.

Endeavour has landed! Our freight forwarding company has informed us that the container has been unloaded and is now awaiting the customs and quarantine processes. A short visit to…

Stop that Scot!

14/9/2011 – 10 A.M. (GMT+9:30)

All seemed to be going well, we’d arrived in Darwin at 4:30am, along with our bags! It seems despite the front of house staff being baffled by our tickets, Qantas, British Airways and Jetstar had managed to communicate with each other such that our bags didn’t go AWOL.

We made it all the way to immigration before Alisdair was stopped and held back for a brief chat (for reasons unknown). Once they were convinced he wasn’t smuggling a bag load of haggis into the country, we were free to go and hire a car… or so we’d hoped.

After waiting an hour for Thrifty to open, it turns out not only are there all the solar car teams turning up and booking the big vehicles, but there is also a big young persons’ athletics championship on. As a result there are virtually no cars available at the airport. On the bus we go to check in at Dingo Moon Lodge. Time for a sit down, breakfast and a rethink of our plans (maybe a shower too). We need a car for 5 adults pretty sharpish, we’re due to pick up two more this afternoon!

Grey Eggs and One-Night-Stands

A typical English-summer-grey September (12th) afternoon saw the first four members of CUER set off for Darwin in preparation for the World Solar Challenge.

However, in true CUER style, and with everyone booking their own flights, this was not as simple as the four of us getting on a plane. Four team members on three different routes: Oli S and Alisdair going to Darwin via Singapore; Dan taking the same flight to Signapore but then getting a transfer to Perth before heading to Darwin; and Douglas going via Bangkok, Sydney and then on to Darwin.

Following the passable lemon and coconut chicken noodle dinnner, the passagers of QF3346 to Singapore were treated to a breakfast of sorts. Although suspiciously grey scrambled egg, something that appeared to once have been a sausage and some soggy bacon left much to be desired (the muffin was ok).

The wonders of the departures lounge in Singapore Changi saw three weary travelers visit the cactus garden, checkout the free internet kiosks and wonder around pondering if it is possible to have too many designer handbag shops (it definitely is!).

We did however find a most intriguing sign: “2012, the year we finish our makeover. And…

The End of the Road

Well, we never really thought that yesterday would arrive. We arrived in Adelaide with Endeavour on the trailer but we crossed the finish line in Victoria Square on solar power. We crossed the line at 1:20pm SA time, Saturday 31st October having set off from State Square, Darwin at 8:00am NT time, Sunday 25th October. It took almost six full days, much heartache, and hard work to cover the 3000km from Darwin to Adelaide but we did it and 1616 of those kilometres were under solely solar power.

The feeling of crossing the finish line after such an epic and extraordinary journey was incredible. So many supporters and team family members and other teams were there to welcome us, clapping and cheering as Endeavour came to a final stop over the line. We could not be more pleased and overawed by the achievement of crossing an entire continent and the moment was such that the only way to do it justice was to pick up both of our team managers and throw them bodily into the fountain! A spray of champagne may have made contact with the solar cells but it seemed a fitting end to such an ‘Endeavour’.

The…

Back to Civilisation

We’ve made it! Today we covered about 300 solar kms and this takes our total to over half the race distance driven on solar power alone. Endeavour rolled into Port Augusta this afternoon at 3:30pm to complete her final race driving. We are not allowed to drive solar the final 300km to Adelaide because we arrived in Port Augusta after midday, but we have officially crossed the continent!

We could not be more pleased with how it has gone considering the problems we’ve had. We’ve covered 1600km using solar power alone and reached speeds of 108kph with the first race car CUER has ever built. The work that has gone towards making this possible is vast, it works out at about 1 man hour for every 100 metres! The team here in Australia and at home have put their all into making this possible and even though we did  not reach Adelaide solely under solar power, we are very proud of Endeavour and how far she has taken us.

This afternoon we drove out of the desert and in to the verdant countryside around Adelaide. The difference was incredible, and the return to civilisation certainly raised team morale after the…

Desert Operations

Another day full of ups and downs for CUER, we were obliged to trailer the car in the morning as per yesterday to try and catch up the rest of the pack. We managed to drive about 200 solar kilometres over the middle part of the day but unfortunately further battery problems put paid to this. Even more cells have died and Chao our battery surgeon had to perform an emergency cell bypass seeing as we are now completely out of spares. This is not an easy thing to do at the best of times, never mind in the back of a truck in the Outback!

On a positive note, we did see Leeming High School on the road which means that we have caught up the back of the pack. Although unfortunately we were on the side of the road when they passed by us…

We arrived at Coober Pedy this afternoon having trailered the final part of the day and bumped into Stanford and McMasters at the Control Point. To give some perspective, Stanford have got this far travelling at an average speed of about 40kph without having trailered. McMasters have trailered since Sunday when their car caught…

Against all odds

Today Endeavour rolled into Alice Springs after four hours of flying along the Stuart Highway at an average speed of 73kph, at times travelling at over 100kph. We have reached the half way point despite our dying battery pack and this is thanks to a caffeine saturated electronics team and the determination of 17 Cambridge students ready to battle on through the Outback whatever it takes.

We may have had to trailer Endeavour in both the morning and evening but we still covered 286 solar kilometres. Endeavour is still very much in the race even if she is some way behind it. With over 1500km under our belt, CUER is ready to face the second half of the race and clock up as many kilometres under the sun as possible. We can still make a good race position regardless of the time or day we arrive in Adelaide and the team are all working flat out to make that happen.

We know that even against all odds; the battery cells are dying off one by one, time is running thin, almost 1500km stretch out ahead of us, but we will make it. Endeavour heads down the Stuart Highway at 8am…

Struggling On

Today we attempted to make up lost time caused by our troubled batteries. We needed to get through the Tennant Creek Control Stop, after its official 11am close, and then on to Barrow Creek by 5pm.  If not we would find ourselves in a position where we were forced to trailer the car in order to catch up with the pack. CUER’s aim had always been to finish the race on solar power alone so this was not an option that we were willing to take.

The day started well, we set off from Dunmarra at 8:27am after serving our 27 mins of battery time penalty, and then maintained an average speed of 70kph until 11:30am. It then became clear the battery problems that we suffered from yesterday were not resolved and the battery pack was under considerable pressure. Chao, Jonathan and Julian, our ace electronics team, managed to get the car back on the road and nurse it through another few hours driving.

However, despite the determined effort of the electronics team, the problems did not subside and we were obliged to pull off the road again. This did not bode well for our 5pm deadline in Barrow Creek.…
